With the cricket world cup fast approaching, any of the top 8 sides believe they are in with a chance of winning. There’s been a mix of results over the last few weeks and months in one day cricket leaving the competition wide open (take Bangladesh’s win over New Zealand for example), Australia have a few key players out due to injury and no there’s Shane Warne to bowl at the death.
It’s not going to be easy for any team, but with some great cricket being played and strength in depth I still think the Australians have to be favourites going into the group stages.
What do you think? Who are you backing to win the world cup?

(Unless they’re jammy like when they won the triangular series!) - Scotland have prob got more chance of winning than England!
Failing that - probably the Aussies! Cos Ponting’s a legend! & he’s so small he’ll fit in your pocket (so my sister says)!
I think that sri lanka will win the world cup this year. THe pitches in the carribean tend to be slow and as sri lanka dont rely on pace, combined with the spinning talent of murali’ the pitches suits them well. They have batting talent too with sangakkora and jayaisuru. (i know i spelt there names wrong!!!) chaminda vaas is underayed too as a seam bowler
As much as i’d love to say England, i think that my money, like David said, is on Sri Lanka, when they perform they are a mighty destructive team easily capable of beating anybody! As long as the Aussies don’t win (closely followed by the South Africans) thats the main thing!
Hmmm I don’t know…Australia would be the team that I’d pick first but if you look at the injuries as well as the recent whitewash NZ handed to them…I really can’t be sure anymore.
But if I HAD to pick one, then Bangladesh all the way =) haha…yeah I’m Bangladeshi…
Oh and David, I doubt Sri Lanka is gonna win this one, because besides Vaas (who really isn’t a strike bowler, more that everyone else is bad so that makes him look good) and Murali, they really don’t have anyone. Jayasuriya is getting old, and Sangakkara is the only reliable one right now. Murali and Sangakkara…can these two really do it by themselves?
As an Indian.I would want India to be winners.
But the Four teams i want ot win the World Cup area:
Australia,England,South Africa and New Zealand.
1) if Australia wins the cup;they will be the first team to win the world cup three times.Straight away!!!
Also there recent loss against England in Tri-series and against NZ will not be an issue for them.
2) England- because they invented the game and are yet to win the world cup.They have a good balanced team and their recent form is an indication.It would be good for them as that is the only thing they have to win.
3) South Africa and New Zealand- because they are a good team and are yet to win the CUp.Even though they have been close to winning it.
The any of the above mentioned teams are capable of winning the World Cup.
People are talking that the pitches in West-indies are suitable to Asian Teams;but i will still be sticking to the above 4 teams.
Some how I doubt Scotland have a better chance of winning than England
My wild card would have to be the West Indies, they’re at home and have alot to prove…yet they can be very unpredictable so we’ll have to see.

South Africa ALL THE WAY
I have a very stong feeling South Africa is going to take this one. Im not saying this only because I am South African but they have been a mighty good team.
They beat Australia in the top of world place in ODI’s and their recent form has been outstanding. Hopefully Greame Smith and his crew can lift the cup at the final!
